In Spring, Warmth Equals Water

Take caution out there. It has been a few years since the Gunnison has filled its banks. There is a good chance that the rising water will pick up more debris than normal and some nasty strainers could develop. If you see a strainer in a dangerous spot please alert the community.

Call for Pictures

I need fun and/or scenic photos of rivers or river running in the Gunnison area. I am adding the Gunnison Region to WorldKayak.com. WK is an online kayaking site with separate web pages for river running regions around the world. It is set up for local paddlers to add content on their region and be availiable for others. It will have run descriptions, hazzard alerts, links to local boating clubs, shops and schools, news feeds, pictures etc.

Please send me some photos to get this site going. Be sure to send a caption with it about location, names of people and who took the picture. Send to gosgood@gmail.com.

Feedback ASAP Please!

Check it out, even Gunnison's fireman are using the park! The features there definitely create opportunities for training that did not exist otherwise.

Steal this PDF!

No, the"word," which precede these is not a misspelling of PFD. I mean this PDF file which has not been and cannot be, stolen. This PDF cannot be stolen, because it is public domain material, as are all the elements of permitting paperwork and natural resources that are involved in enjoying this sort of thing, that sort of thing being, of course, whitewater. Read this document. Read this document and imagine that it was stuffed into an issue of American Whitewater and available at your favorite cafe. Okay, so thats pretty ambitious, and maybe not even a good idea but before you cast your final judgment, read this:

or, if you do not have a pdf viewer:
This link.

If you read this and have an opinion, click the 'read more,' link to read my own.

Lake Fork Box

We hit the Lake Fork Box yesterday. No big whitewater, but super pretty. I'm suprised this doesn't get much traffic. Definitely possible for an after work run - we put in at 5:30 and were done by 8 (in spite of a minor swim epic). There's a nice surf wave about 1 mile above the highway bridge.

Here's some pictures: http://wiki.western.edu/mcis/index.php/HAC/Lake_Fork_Box

West Water Canyon at 13000

Some friends and I ran West Water Canyon on the Colorado River May 19, 2007. It was running somewhere near 13000cfs. We had a permit for 15 but with some last hour drop outs and 2 no shows it was just 4 of us. I learned a valuable lesson in obtaining permits. Just reserve your permit for 2 people and add on as nessesary once people are confirmed and paid.

So as it was, we had one 16 foot cat, an oarsman and 3 passengers.
